GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Ibarra is a city in northern Ecuador and the capital of the Imbabura Province. It lies at the foot of the Imbabura Volcano and on the left bank of the Tahuando river. It is about 70 kilometres northeast of Ecuador's capital Quito.

CAPILLA EPISCOPAL

Built at the beginning od the 20th century, the Episcopal Chapel has an eclectic style predominating the Neogothic style patterns of Romanesque origin. It is surrounded by buildings of modern style such as the Municipality of Ibarra, the Banco de Fomento and traditional buildings such as the Governorate (Torreon).

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Ibarra is a cathedral located in the center of Ibarra.

CITY CENTER

Ibarra has colonial white-washed houses (giving it the nickname "The White City"), and cobbled streets. The Santo Domingo church houses a museum holding 18th century paintings.

EL OBELISCO

The Obelisk is a monolith erected in the center of the "Alejandro Pasquel Monge" square in Ibarra, next to the renovated Ibarra-Salinas railway station.

IGLESIA SANTO DOMINGO

The Santo Domingo Church is located in the Boyacá square, dating from the time of the founding of Ibarra. It has a beautiful stone façade and its altar is dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary. It also exhibits a great variety of pictorial works and sculptures framed with wooden altarpieces.

PARQUE PEDRO MONCAYO

Parque Pedro Moncayo is a palm-filled plaza dominated by the baroque-influenced cathedral. The altars are covered in gold leaves, and Troya’s paintings of the 12 apostles adorn the pillars.

REAL BASILICA DE LA MERCED

The Basilica of the Merced is of Roman style, located between Sánchez, Cifuentes and Flores streets. The church was built at the end of the 19th century and concluded in 1945.

TORREON DE LA CIUDAD

El Torreón is located outside the old school Teodoro Gómez de La Torre, in front of Pedro Moncayo Park. It was built by mandate of Colonel Teodoro Gómez and is also known as "the Clock Tower".
